My Sister's Place & VNY! - Adopt a RISE Family for the Holidays

RISE (Rehousing in Supportive Environments) is a collaboration between My Sisters' Place, Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill, and Lifting up Westchester that helps house survivors of domestic violence and their children who are homeless due to domestic violence or who want to flee their abusive situation. Together, these agencies help families reintegrate themselves into the community after experiencing abuse. For many, this will be the first time they will be spending the holidays alone.

Volunteers are asked to "adopt" a RISE family to help bring some much-needed holiday cheer this season. Once volunteers are matched with an anonymous family, they will receive the survivor's story as well as their holiday wish list. Volunteers will purchase and wrap gifts on the family's wish list and deliver them to My Sister's Place office by December 8, 2023. The gifts will then be delivered to their adopted family.

To "RISE" to the occasion and "adopt" a RISE family for the holidays, express interest below—or express interest as a "family, group, or team" if volunteering as a group of two or more—to get started.

Redlich Horowitz Foundation Open Call for Grant Proposals

RHF Announces
Open Call for Grant Proposals
For community-based and grassroots organizations serving children and families in NY

As RHF works to support grassroots movement-building across NY, we want to make it easier for groups working in the rest of state regions of NY (outside of NYC) to access funding to support families and mobilize community activism against system oppression. RHF seeks to identify and support the resources and capacity of community-based organizations that are meeting the concrete needs of children and families and leading local grassroots organizing. We want to support efforts to build power and achieve justice for families, especially related to family policing/child welfare, education, mental health, housing, and resource-access, and we’re prioritizing the regions in and around Albany, Erie, Monroe, Nassau, Onondaga, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.  Applications are due November 30th.

Summary:

  • RHF expects to make 7-10 grants ranging in size from $10,000-$50,000, with 1–3-year grant commitments.

  • The purpose of these grants is to support local community-based and grassroots organizations to uplift children, youth and families who are at-risk or already involved in the child welfare system and are in communities that are deeply surveilled and impacted.

  • Organizations may use the funds to organize local communities to build power and advocate for family justice in the family policing/child welfare space or address the intersection of education, mental health, housing and resource-access; and/or to provide material supports to families and organizational capacity building through general operating funds.

  • RHF seeks to support the capacity and development of organizations operating in NYS counties outside NYC, and priority will be given to organizations operating in local communities in the regions of Albany, Erie, Monroe, Nassau, Onondaga, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.

RHF will host an informational webinar on November 6th at 3:30 p.m. to provide an overview of the Open Call and to answer any questions from applicants. Please register for the webinar here.

The Open Call application can be found here and on the RHF website; applications are due Thursday, November 30, 2023 by 5pm to Hope Newton via email at hnewton@rhfdn.org.

Westchester County Department of Planning Launches Transportation and Food Access Study

The Westchester County Department of Planning, with the support of the Department of Health, is launching a survey as part of its Transportation and Food Access Study. The survey asks Westchester residents ages 18 and older to share their experiences travelling to get groceries, as well as information on the type and affordability of food available to them in the County.

The goal of the study is to develop effective strategies to increase Westchester County resident access to affordable, quality food, with the goal of decreasing food insecurity, improving health outcomes, and increasing the quality of life in Westchester. The study will include a County-wide analysis, as well as a more detailed examination of a yet to be determined smaller study area.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “The entire purpose of this study is for the County to find out more about the obstacles that stand in the way of our residents accessing affordable, nutritious food. We want to increase accessibility to the groceries that people truly need so our residents can live longer, healthier lives. I encourage anyone who has a few minutes to participate in this survey, to help us decrease food insecurity across Westchester.”

Westchester County Commissioner of Planning Blanca Lopez said: “The Planning Department is excited to launch this survey County-wide to obtain much needed primary information on how Westchester County residents access food. Survey responses will help us identify challenges as well as better understand the experiences that survey-takers have in accessing affordable and nutritious food. We are grateful to our colleagues in the Health Department, as well as our partners from community-based organizations who are helping us with survey distribution and data collection, so that our study can develop effective strategies and recommendations to increase food access to as many County residents as possible.”

The anonymous survey is available in English and in Spanish online, as well as hard copy now through November 17. The assessment seeks to identify how Westchester residents access groceries, what types of groceries are available to them, and what obstacles exist accessing groceries.

Some of the issues that will be explored include: Improving transit, pedestrian and bicycle connection to existing food sources; improving food distribution and delivery options; and changes to zoning, land use and other municipal policies to increase the availability of groceries.

The survey will be distributed via email to a diverse range of community groups, and will be available on paper and via QR code on fliers placed in public locations such as food pantries, public transit, hospitals, clinics and County offices. Health Department staff also will be onsite at some locations to help promote the survey.

The survey is part of the Transportation and Food Access Study administered by the Westchester County Department of Planning, and conducted by the planning firm Steer. The results of the survey will be analyzed alongside targeted stakeholder outreach and available data to identify existing challenges related to food access in Westchester County.
